Instruction for Powerlook 2100XL USB in Windows 8

Hi, Folks, welcome to my blog! My name is Eric Alvarado and I live in a little town nearby Corpus Christi, south of Texas. I am a long time royal fan of UMAX Powerlook 2100XL USB scanner for years. This scanner has the best quality other scanners don't have. It is a pity that UMAX doesn't come with Windows 7 & 8 official driver. However, here I provide a patch driver file to make it work in Windows 7 & 8. Thanks God for giving me this idea!! Now I can use my scanner at work. It's great! And I love to share this to everyone! Here we go....

Installation Instruction for Windows 8:

In Windows 8, Microsoft added a feature "driver signature enforcement". It enables the restriction which doesn't allow any un-signed device driver software to be installed on Windows 8 computer. So far this patch file is not yet Microsoft digital signed so it won't be allowed to install at any Windows 8 computer anyway. In order to install this unsigned scanner driver, we will have to disable driver signature feature first. After it is bypassed, the rest of installation procedure will be the same as Windows 7.

Step 1:
launch the charm bar, and click "Change PC Settings" at the bottom. Then, go to General, and scroll to the bottom of the page, click Restart Now button under Advanced Startup section. Remember to save all your work first before clicking it.

Step 2:
Once the PC comes back up, select “Troubleshoot”:
Select "Advanced options".
Select "Startup Settings".

Click on "Restart".

Your computer will reboot and prompt another menu to choose. One of the items is to Disable driver signature enforcement. Press number or F7 to continue booting to Windows 8 with digital sign enforcement disabled.

Step 3:
Now start to install driver for UMAX scanner...
Download a patch file to your computer and remember its location. Download link is below:

Step 4:
Go back to charm bar at right hand side. Click on "Settings" in the bottom.
And select "Control Panel".
Select "View device and printers" under Hardware and Sound.
Locate the UMAX USB Scanner device. Right click on it and select "Properties".

Click on Hardware Tab and select "Properties".
Click on "Change settings" button.

Click on "Update Driver" button.

Select "Browse my computer for driver software" option in the bottom.
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
Select "Image devices" and click on "Next" button.
Click on "Have Disk" button.
Locate the patch file you just download earlier and browse/open it from "Have Disk" window. Ignore the warning message below and click on "Next" button.
Ignore the pop-up warning message and click on "Yes".
Ignore another warning message and click on "Install this driver software anyway".
You are done. Click on "Close" button and you are ready to use Powerlook 2100XL scanner by opening MagicScan 6.0 program!

  1. Are there any plans to make a Windows 10 driver for this scanner? I tried following the Windows 8 steps and got errors when I went to try to use it. I can't remember the exact error right off, but it was something that clearly indicated that it was not compatible with Windows 10.
